This work takes three different places in the woods near where I live in Oslo as its starting point. Four times over a two month period I visited these places. I walked, watched and listened with binaural microphones in my ears and a camera in my hand, capturing the seasonal changes in the landscape at different parts of the day. The composition is then a staging of these sites: a staging of those listening experiences; a retracing of the steps in the recordings, deconstructing the recorded images and sounds and piecing them back together while framing them in new ways.

Partially hidden behind a screen «the listener-composer» and performers are mediated live through cameras and amplification — moving in, out and through the virtual sites, highlighting and articulating parts of the recorded soundscapes through sound processing, foley work and their instruments.

This work is part of my ph.D project in artistic research at the Norwegian Academy of Music. The project is an artistic exploration of the concept of “hyperreality,” where I use headphones, binaural sound, live cameras and other technology to create extended and distorted auditory realities.

Martin Hirsti-Kvam (1991-)

is a composer who creates conceptually-oriented works, often using electronics, visual elements and sampling in dialogue with live performers, always in an attempt to give new perspectives and reflection to what constitutes music, listening and live performance. Technology is an important part of his work: as an extension of the live space, blending the virtual and the real in immersive ways using projections, electronics and binaural recordings; and also through incorporating archival material in the form of old recordings played through record players, cassette players and old FM-radios.
From 2025 he is a Ph.D. research fellow in artistic research at the Norwegian Academy of Music. In 2018, he won the Kranichsteiner prize for Composition at the Darmstadt Summer Courses. He has had works performed by ensembles such as Ensemble Adapter, Cikada, Bastard Assignments, BIT20, Pinquins and asamisimasa and has had works performed at venues such as Ultima Festival, Warsaw Autumn, SPOR Festival, Klang festival, Only Connect and at the Darmstadt Summer Courses. tra.
